Rick Springfield Arrested for DUI
Although he hasn't been putting out any hits recently, Rick Springfield found himself back in the news this week - for driving while intoxicated in California.
The 61-year-old singer, who became famous for his hit "Jessie's Girl," was pulled over on Saturday night and given several field sobriety tests. After failing those, a Breathalyzer revealed his blood-alcohol content to be 0.08 and 0.10; the legal state limit is 0.08. He was taken into custody by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
While Springfield's arrest might not make serious news based on his old celebrity status, it does show our country's continuing problem with drunk driving. In 2009 alone, 1.4 million drivers were arrested for DUI of alcohol or narcotics; 10,829 people were killed in alcohol-related car accidents during that same year. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control reports that one-third of all traffic deaths are caused by alcohol.
