Gymnastics Coach Facing Sexual Assault Charges
A gymnastics coach that already beat a sexual assault rap once is now set to be tried again on new charges.
A young girl has come forward to say that Michael Cardamone, 33, sexually assaulted her back in 2002 when he was coaching her. She is one of several girls that have come forward since the three-year period when he was coaching at his family's facility, the American Institute of Gymnastics. The trial against Cardamone in 2005 led to a split jury, meaning that Cardamone was charged with sexual assault for seven victims, while the remaining seven he was acquitted of.
However, the Illinois Appellate Court soon threw these convictions out as well, in addition to his 20-year jail sentence. The court ruled that jurors were given the chance to hear overly prejudicial testimony, without being given the chance to hear counter testimony.
The Cardamone family told the press recently that their son has been offered several plea deals over the years, all of which were turned down to maintain his innocence.
