School in Shock Following Shooting
According to the Associated Press, officials at a high school where a gun went off in a student's backpack and led to two students being injured did not use a metal detector to check students as required. This information was released by the head of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Reports indicate that Gardena High School was supposed to conduct random checks of students with a handheld security want on a daily basis, but this did not occur on Tuesday.
John Deasy, the assistance superintendent for the district, said that he is "disturbed and angry" that security checks did not occur. He said that disciplinary action will be taken and the security policy for the district will be reviewed.
On Tuesday, a 17-year-old student was placed under arrest at the high school for weapon charges after he brought a 9mm semiautomatic pistol to the campus in his backpack. The gun went off when he dropped his backpack on his desk and wounded two 15 year old. Both of the students were in critical condition following the incident.
