Murder Suspect Freed due to Police Coercion
Police coercion is the reason stated for letting one man free who had been accused of murder.
When Edward Arch went to trial this month he had already spent three years in prison awaiting his time before the judge. After all that waiting, however, Superior Court Judge Harvey Giss accepted the defense attorney's request to have the case dismissed due to a lack of evidence.
In 2007, when Arch was arrested, he was 19 years old. After several hours of interrogation by police he confessed to the murder of a man that was shot after a verbal dispute in North Hills. However, the judge found that police had broken interrogation rules, such as wrongly promising Arch that he would receive leniency upon confessing, prompting him to drop the case. It was also brought to light that Arch had repeatedly stated that he hadn't shot the man and even offered to take a lie detector test.
