California Man Sentenced to Repay State over $1.3 Million

Joseph Baiden, 57, of Diamond Bar, CA, has been ordered to repay more than $1.3 million as part of his insurance fraud sentence, according to Los Angeles County prosecutors. Baiden pleaded guilty to the charges, and received five years of probation in addition to the restitution payment after Judge David Horwitz suspended Baiden's five-year prison term.
Baiden underreported the number of employees he maintained at his nurse staffing agency to the State Fund. As a result Baiden underpaid his workers' compensation insurance, which ultimately resulted in his insurance fraud charges. Deputy District Attorney Ellen Aragon says that in addition to the moneys Baiden owes the state, he was ordered to pay the CA Department of Insurance investigative costs of $110,000.
Baiden is scheduled to return to court on November 8 for a progress report.
