Instructor Charged with Murder
An instructor at a Charlotte college was so intent onmurder that she drove more than 600 miles to find her victim. Julie Ann Hopwood, 56, drove from Charlotte to Livonia, Michigan to kill 35-year-old Amy Chesbro. She waited outside a business for nearly an hour before Chesbro emerged, after which she shot her six times.
Hopwood teaches respiratory therapy and psychology at Central Piedmont Community College. Her students were "flabbergasted" when they learned the news about their "strict but kind" teacher. It was brought to the investigators' knowledge that Hopwood took a leave of absence last summer.
At this time CPCC is not commenting on her status at the college.
When Hopwood appeared in court on Sunday she seemed calm, telling the judge that she may not get a lawyer in Charlotte even though the judge was cautioning her not to speak.
Police are not discussing a motive at this time for the shooting, only that she is related to Chesbro's roommate. Investigators have also asked Hopwood's friends not to make any comments to the press either.
